The Sustainability Timeline, printed with low-VOC eco-friendly UV inks and printed on salvaged glass panels, is featured on the first floor of The Merchandise Mart. The timeline celebrates many of the accomplishments of The Merchandise Mart, our showroom partners and the City of Chicago. Addressing global environmental challenges, the display highlights the product innovations, research findings and events of the last several decades that reduce our environmental footprint and make the world a better place to live.

The recycled polyester fibers used in the construction of House Party are made from post consumer polyester. One source for post consumer polyesters is plastic water bottles; each yard of this fabric represents about 17 reclaimed plastic bottles. House Party is Cradle to Cradle Silver certified and the mill that manufactures this product is partially wind powered.

Since 2001, Brentano has been developing polyurethane based faux leather
as a greener, more environmentally friendly alternative to dioxin releasing vinyl (PVC) and the Chromium-laden production of leather. Paparazzi is a dry processed polyurethane leather and is made with less then 1% solvent in a ISO 14001 certified facility. The backing fabric of Paparazzi is made of recycled polyester and the surface polyurethane material is degradable.

New technology offers 1/3 reduction in total carpet weight, a benefit that accrues to lower shipping and fuel costs. At the end of the tile life cycle, this carpet tile can be recycled back into itself without separating the backing from the face fiber.

Bamboo is a renewable resource and regenerates without replanting. It can be harvested in 3-5 years as opposed to much longer for most hardwoods. Bamboo is a durable, versatile and good looking material. The bamboo is cut into pieces and then dried. These pieces are then put together to form larger shapes and patterns and then cut to specified dimensions to create the board designs. The cutting boards are then sanded and coated with mineral oil.
