Great Grey Lady
Great Grey Magnificent Lady called The Merchandise Mart
Born during the depression, you have done more than your part.
You have created jobs all through these years
Heard much laughter, maybe a few tears.
You are a great lady, a fortress of strength
Strong is your concrete throughout your great length.
Offices, restaurants, shops, various trade shows
The great lady has seen them, somehow she knows.
Many people of color of various shades
Office, security, dockworkers and all different trades
All pulling together to work as one team
This is what the grey lady wants, so it would seem.
But strong as you are, it’s the people within
That shapes you character; that’s why you will win.
By the rivers edge the great lady rises
Looking down on the boats of various sizes.
And the great lady has a tender good heart
When I think of the programs that she helped to start.
I remember the food drive, when people did share
This proves a point then that most people care.
So keep up the good work great lady of mine
Your great aging beauty just gets better with time.
You are a great lady, a fortress of strength
Strong is the concrete, throughout your great length.
The flags fly in front of the building today
God’s watching over the building, this we can say.
So we salute this building called The Merchandise Mart
Knowing we’re winners by doing our part.
